Death is Dead
Psalm 90 invites us into a profound meditation on the brevity of life and the eternality of God. We discover that while God exists from everlasting to everlasting, our days are numbered like grass that flourishes in the morning and withers by evening. This stark reality could leave us in despair, but the psalmist leads us somewhere far more beautiful. The prayer 'teach us to number our days' isn't a call to live in fear of death, but rather an invitation to live with profound purpose and joy. When we truly grasp that our lives are finite, we stop postponing real living until tomorrow and instead embrace today with intentionality. The psalmist prays for us to be satisfied each morning with God's steadfast love, to rejoice and be glad all our days, and to see our work established with eternal significance. This transforms everything—our morning coffee, our daily work, our family dinners—from meaningless routines into moments charged with eternal purpose. The answer to this ancient prayer came in Jesus Christ, who numbered His own days perfectly and conquered death itself so that we could live without guilt and without fear. We learn that death doesn't get the final word, and that our worst sufferings will one day fly away like a dream. This isn't heavy theology meant to burden us; it's liberating truth meant to help us live fully alive, starting today.
